A large vase of the Kosta Boda "Rio Face" series designed by Kjell Engman in 1975. Incised signature of the artist on the base. Clear glass with high relieff decor of a stylized face, etched and decorated with jellow, orange and green glass powder.
Kjell Engman (*1946) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gothenburg and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, during which time he completed a internship at Kosta Boda. After completing his studies, he joined Kosta Boda as a glass designer in 1978. In 1981, he attended a course at the Pilchuck Art Center. His glass objects are characterized by bold colors and playful shapes. He often explores the theme of water or chooses motifs from the animal and plant world. In 2009, he set up his own studio in Kosta Glasbruk. Engman has designed many notable installations and artworks, one of which is the cobalt blue bar at Kosta Boda Hotel that is made out of 3.5 tons of glass. His glass objects are on display at the Swedish Glass Museum in Växjö, the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm, the Glass Museum in Ebeltoft, the Corning Museum of Glass and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, among others.
