Item e7123

A powerful sculpture of a stylized ice bear in smoke grey glass. The bear is hand made in the Graal glass manufactory, Germany. It was designed by Livio Seguso ca. 1970. The sculpture´s base is features the incised signature of the artist (LS).

Livio Seguso (* 1930) comes from a Venetian glassmaking family. At the age of fourteen he began his training as a glassblower at the glass manufactory of his uncle Alfredo Barbini. There he worked until 1960 as an assistant and later moved to Salvati & C as a master glassblower. There Livio Seguso worked closely with artistic director Luciano Gaspari. Finally in 1969 he founded his own studio. During the 1970s, in a collaboration with the Gral Glaswerkstaetten in Duernau, Germany, Livio Seguso created a series of abstract animal sculptures. Seguso is one of the few maestros in the lagoon city of Venice to catch up with developments in international studio glass. His glass sculptures are mainly made of clear glass and feature rounded or elliptical forms. From the 1990s Seguso began to conceive volumes with a more geometrical pattern. Many of his sculptures are held by bases of metal, marble, granite or wood as a counterpoint.
