A large vase of the 'Folto' series in green glass with black rim and ondulating decoration of a black glass thread. Designed by Toots Zynsky ca. 1984, manufactured by Venini, Venice in 1988. The incised signature 'Zynsky Venini 88' is on the base.
Toots Zynsky (*1951) studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1971, she supported Dale Chihuly and others in founding the Pilchuck Glass School. From 1980 to 1983, she was involved in the development of the second New York Experimental Glass Workshop, now UrbanGlass. In 1984, Zynsky was invited to the Venini glassworks on Murano. There she rethought her early, thread-wrapped, blown vessels. The result was the unusual Folto vases that she designed for Venini. While living in Europe in the late 80s and 90s, Zynsky worked with Mathijs Teunissen Van Manen on the development of a glass-threading machine. It was during these years that she developed her unique “filet-de-verre” technique. Zynsky's works are represented in more than 70 museum collections around the world. In 1999, Zynsky and her family moved from Europe to the United States and settled in Providence, Rhode Island, where Zynsky lives and works today.
