An antique, hand-painted marksmen's target, featuring a vibrant oil painting of a knight on horseback plunging dramatically off a cliff. The painting is a depiction of the legend of the 15th century knight Harras, who jumped off a rock into the river to escape from his enemies. It bears the hand-painted inscription of the donor and the winner. Shot in Germany in 1902. Good condition, paint partly craqueled.
The target of honor or king's target is a traditional award in shooting competitions. The tradition is predominantly widespread in southern Germany, Austria and Lower Saxony. Honorary targets are donated and shot in honor of a personality, on the occasion of a birthday, a wedding or a prize shooting competition. They were often artistically designed and hand-painted, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. With the advent of printing technology, targets were also created using artistic prints.
