Oil Painting by Alexander Michael - 'Return to the Island', Lake Chiemsee
Item e8108

The painting 'Return to the Island' from 1994 depicts a harbor scene on Lake Chiemsee, capturing a fleeting moment of arrival in an expressive, impressionistic style. The composition is defined by two wooden jetties extending into the calm water, creating a clear spatial structure within the scene. Between the two jetties, a small rowing boat is shown with a single figure inside, in the act of mooring the boat. Additional boats are tied along the jetties, their forms and reflections suggested with energetic, textured brushstrokes. Quick, lively strokes convey reflections, movement, and the shimmering surface of the lake. In the background, the lake opens out toward a low shoreline with loosely indicated vegetation, lending depth and a sense of calm to the scene. The painting is signed and dated 'AM 94' in the lower right corner.

Alexander Michael (1939-2024) was a German landscape, still life and architectural painter. His paintings can be stylistically assigned to Impressionism or a late Impressionist style. His loose painting style, applied with a sure hand, creates a lively and atmospheric effect with visible brushstrokes and bright colors. The light conditions, color tones and the artist's subjective perception are characteristic of his works.
