A magnificent chandelier from Murano, designed in 1946 by Gio Ponti for Venini, Venice. White opaque “lattimo” glass with several overlays of light green and clear glass. The model number 5523 is stamped into the metal base. The chandelier has five electrified spouts. A great example of 20th century Murano glass design. The chandelier is in excellent condition. It will be disassembled for shipping.
Gio Ponti (1891 - 1979) enrolled at the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano in 1914. His studies were interrupted by the war, and after graduating in 1921, Ponti founded an architectural practice. During this time, Ponti joined the neoclassical Novecento movement and campaigned for a revival of art and culture. In 1928, Ponti founded Domus. In his search for new methods of expressing Italian modernism, Ponti distanced himself from the currents of the Novecento and attempted to reconcile art and industry. Together with the engineers Eugenio Soncini and Antonio Fornaroli, Ponti enjoyed great success in industry and received numerous commissions throughout Italy. Ponti met Paolo Venini in the 1920s. Ponti and Venini collaborated on several projects and in the late 1940s Ponti designed several glass series and lighting fixtures for Venini.
