Antique Hand-Carved Tyrolean Farmer Sculpture, ca. 1880
Item e7745

This finely carved wooden figure depicts a traditional Tyrolean farmer sitting relaxed on a rock. Wearing his typical attire, including a hat and lederhosen, the figure reflects the rural life of the Alpine region. The detailed carving of the clothing and facial features suggests it was made in Val Gardena South Tyrol around 1880.

The woodcarving tradition in Val Gardena is a craft that has been practiced in South Tyrol for over 300 years. It originated out of necessity and has developed into a world-famous art form. The woodcarvers mainly produce sacred and secular figures from Swiss pine, ranging from nativity figures and saints to animals and depictions of people in traditional costume. Traditionally, the art of carving is passed down within families.
