Antique Carved Wood Relief by Sebastian Steiner, ca. 1900
Item e8063

This finely carved wooden relief by Sebastian Steiner from Meran depicts a detailed Alpine scene. It was carved around 1900 based on the painting ‘Die Braurwerbung’ (The Brewery Advertisement) by Franz Defregger. The composition shows a traditional domestic gathering with several people sitting around a table, while two men enter the room, one of whom is holding a hat in a gesture of greeting. The scene conveys everyday life and social interaction, with facial expressions, posture and historical clothing carefully reproduced. The relief is behind glass in an elegant black lacquered wooden frame decorated with ornate historicist metal applications featuring scroll and floral motifs.

The tradition of wood carving, using manual skills to make everyday objects and fine art sculptures, is found throughout Europe. The incentive to create not only useful but also aesthetically beautiful things, distinguishes the craftsman from the artist. In addition to the well-known Swiss wood carving artists, others can also be named in Italy / Tyrol with Steiner, in Germany with Madel and in Austria with Heissl. Their wood-carving art works with sculptures, wall plaques and reliefs enhance any interior design.
