Antique Honor Target with Large Eagle, Germany 1929
Item e8152

An antique round wooden shooting plaque featuring a print of a scene of a large eagle in flight above a mountainous landscape. The eagle is depicted with detailed brown and golden feathers, set against a blue sky and forested hills. A maroon border with gold lettering surrounds the painting, indicating that the plaque was a gift from the Burschschuetzen society for an opening shoot on November 14, 1929, and that it was won by Josef Wiederkehr Jr.

The target of honor or king's target is a traditional award in shooting competitions. The tradition is predominantly widespread in southern Germany, Austria and Lower Saxony. Honorary targets are donated and shot in honor of a personality, on the occasion of a birthday, a wedding or a prize shooting competition. They were often artistically designed and hand-painted, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. With the advent of printing technology, targets were also created using artistic prints.
