Antique Honor Target with Alpine Landscape and Chalet, Germany 1933
Item e8148

An antique honorary shooting target in octagonal shape with gold lettering around the edge and decorated with a colorful print featuring an alpine landscape with a chalet, a valley village, and mountains in the background. Several bullet marks appear in the center, indicating its use in a shooting competition. The inscription states that the plaque was awarded for an opening shoot on 18 November 1933 and won by Josef Winterholler Jr.

The target of honor or king's target is a traditional award in shooting competitions. The tradition is predominantly widespread in southern Germany, Austria and Lower Saxony. Honorary targets are donated and shot in honor of a personality, on the occasion of a birthday, a wedding or a prize shooting competition. They were often artistically designed and hand-painted, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. With the advent of printing technology, targets were also created using artistic prints.
