Antique Honor Target with Stag Family, Germany 1916
Item e7614

An antique honorary shooting target, adorned with a vibrant print of a family of deer observing a train as it passes by. There is a handwritten inscription of the winner on the front and the inscriptions of the other participants on the back. Shot in Germany in 1916.

The target of honor or king's target is a traditional award in shooting competitions. The tradition is predominantly widespread in southern Germany, Austria and Lower Saxony. Honorary targets are donated and shot in honor of a personality, on the occasion of a birthday, a wedding or a prize shooting competition. They were often artistically designed and hand-painted, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. With the advent of printing technology, targets were also created using artistic prints.
