the woodcarvings known as "black forest woodcarvings" origin mostly not from the area of the Black Forest in south Germany. I fact the origin of these carvings is in the area of Brienz in Swizerland. Of course there are carvings from the Black Forest as there are the Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks but they reach by far not the quality and originality like those from Brienz. The tradition of woodcarving in Brienz starts in the beginning of the 19th century. A disastrous famine forced the residents of the brienz are to look for new sources of income. some which had a sort of talent for carving started to sell carvings to tourists.
