Antique Sicilian Opera dei Pupi Theater Marionette, ca. 1930s
Item e6974

A large Sicilian theater (Opera dei Pupi) marionette, which is made of tin, wood and canvas ca. 1930s.

The Sicilian Puppet Theater developed in the first half of the 19th century. It arose from the tradition of cuntastorie, street singers who performed great epics of chivalry. By means of elaborately crafted puppets, incidents from the medieval history of Sicily are depicted. Puppets from the puppet theater are very popular today and are exhibited in many museums.
