A large garden gnome from Germany, ca. 1900s. The sleeping gnome has a pipe in his hand and is leaning against a tree stump. Above the gnome is a small angel teasing him. The stump of the terracotta sculpture is hollow and can be used as a flower pot. Very good original vintage condition.

Traditionally, the garden figures represented male gnomes wearing red pointed caps and carrying garden tools, typically between one and two feet tall and used in Europe as decoration for bourgeois gardens.
